This is truly a wonderful time to visit Ragged Point and the beautiful scenic Central California Coast! The fires (both the Big Sur Basin Fire and Indians Fire) are 100% contained and the damage was mostly confined to the inland wilderness areas. All Pacific Coast Highway 1 businesses are back open. All of the coastal day use and picnic areas from Point Lobos to San Simeon are open including Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. The smoke is gone and the air is clean again, most parks and campgrounds including Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park are back open and operational and cancellations because of the fire have left many vacancies. Telephone any specific business you plan on visiting but unless you were planning a wilderness excursion there should be no fires or closures to hamper your perfect vacation! 07/30/08

You should gas up before you come because the price of gas is now over $5 a gallon at Joe's Ragged Point Inn Service Station but the gas gets even more expensive further up the Pacific Coast Highway and it's about 30 miles south down PCH to the closest gas so fill up at Joe's before you leave Ragged Point. Another way to help offset the high price of gas is to stay at a
state park campground near Hearst Castle and camp a day or two of your vacation and enjoy a
picnic lunch near Hearst Castle sometimes in place of an expensive Big Sur Ocean View restaurant.

The Magic of

On the Scenic Pacific Coast Highway 1, between Big Sur and San Simeon, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, lies Ragged Point that is part of the huge San Simeon Hearst Ranch property which also includes San Simeon's world famous Hearst Castle. Just north of Ragged Point is the Ragged Point Inn and Resort; the property was first purchased from Hearst by a carnival owner by the name of Monte Young and then,in 1961, by Wiley and Mildred Ramey. At that small snack shop sporting a neon sign glaring the word "EAT," and ocean views of the California rugged Big Sur Coast.
In 1961 the Ragged Point Inn, the restaurant, the gift shop, and everything else that is now the Ragged Point Inn and Resort was only a dream.
The development of this special place 15 miles north of San Simeon Hearst Castle on the Pacific Coast Hichway 1 has been a labor of love for the Ramey family who have attempted to create an environment that provides the same magic to their guests as they have enjoyed over the last three decades
