Welcome to The Henry Miller Library Website.

This greeting is a simple gesture of thanks for all the wonderful support that we have received this year in defense of our right to do nothing! Thank You! We could list people and places to thank like The Bakery, Big Sur Land Trust, Deetjen’s, Ventana, The Maiden, CPOA, Big Sur Marathon, etc. but it would get too long...

Photos on the card show the testing of the ‘Whale-Net’ done after consulting w/ AIS engineers. We concluded that it would help in case of a debris flow. (The net passed this test but let us hope it doesn’t have to be subjected to another one.) We send out heartfelt thanks to CalTrans, AIS, Granite Rock, and others, who helped to create and install this wondrous contraption.

We have evacuated all original artwork, letters, manuscripts, photos etc. to the newly finished archive rooms at CSUMB (big thanks to them!). But the Henry Miller Library will stay open this winter as usual so please stop by. You may find a good book to read, or one to stuff into someone’s stocking. Big Sur residents will receive a 25% discount!

There are few things better than gazing up at the Milky Way for getting into the spirit of the Holiday Season! So here’s to everyone enjoying the amazing Big Sur night skies this winter! Fortunately most people living in Big Sur understand to protect the skies by keeping lights dimmed or off at night.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Let’s stay warm and cozy!

The baboons in the net are: Brendan Esons, Carlotta Persson, Shaun P Biglin, Carissa Fritts, Seanan Moses, Eric Perley, Amanda Esons, Jon Knight, Sarah Loveland, Keely Richter, Mike West, Arthur Thomas, Susanna Williams, Ryan Gellert and Ashleigh Poland.

NEW RELEASE:

“These Are My Flowers: Raising a Family on the Big Sur Coast --- Letters of Nancy Hopkins”
is based on letters Nancy wrote to her parents in Berkeley after she married Sam Hopkins and moved into their new home on Partington Ridge in 1948. As such, it offers a “slice of life” view of living in Big Sur in the 1950s, one woman’s view of her world and her time. Henry Miller and his wife Lepska, the children, Valentine and Tony, and later Henry's fourth wife Eve, were close neigbors of whom Nancy writes. More here.

Buy the book! Books ship every Wednesday. Thanks to a very generous arrangement w/ the publisher/editor we are able to sell this for only $ 24.95. The book is very well put together, high quality paper, photos etc.

How do I get to the Library? Well, most people drive, some people drive large vehicles, others drive small. We like the people who take along three or more people in each car; our favorite people are the ones who take the bus! That's why we're offering a whoopin' 25% discount on all book purchases in our bookstore. All you need is a proof of having come down the coast by bus. Public transportation is a matter of politics here in the West and we'd like to show where we think the cupboard should be placed. We also think you'd enjoy the ride. Bus schedule here! Click on "Big Sur Service"

(The Library is only ten minutes walk past the end station at Nepenthe)
