No Pressure Whatsoever!

Not only was a double prize fund and a spot on the 2009 Zone team on the line this weekend, but Gene Van Puymbroeck, with a second place finish in his flight, could wrestle the Player of the Year award away from George Mahoney.

Gene came through with a 69-66-135 performance to be the low score for the weekend, earn a spot on the Zone team, win the $100 for first place in his flight and secure the 2008 Player of the Year.

Congratulations Gene!

Joining Gene will be Siva Ramamurthy, Jonathan Cho and Doug Patterson. They will represent Shoreline GC at the South Bay Zone Tournament at Poppy Hills and Bayonet next May.

This is the third NCGA event Gene has qualified for this year. He and Siva both made the 2008 Zone team and Gene also qualified for the Senior 4-Ball tournament.

By playing in the Zone Qualifier this weekend, Chris Mateo won the 2nd half Member of the Year award.

When was the last time you saw and eagle on #16 not win a skin? #9, maybe? Well, it happened on Sunday as both Bob Wang and Chris Mateo each carded 3’s on the par 5 16th.

Six players each won a $10 skin on Saturday. There were also six $11 skins on Sunday with Charlie McDonald winning three of them, giving him a total of four for the weekend.

The Low Net Side Pots were won by Jonathan Cho on Saturday and Bob Wang in a tiebreaker on Sunday.

Norm Akita and Charlie each won a Low Gross Side Pot with Dick Dalton taking the Low Putts Pot on Saturday and Doug Patterson winning Low Net - Back Nine on Sunday.

Scramble Results

Gary Toepper and Matt Ward found a way to handle the recently punched greens. Instead of putting on them, they just chipped it in.

Their three chip ins on Saturday provided the margin of victory in our Two Person Scramble. Gary and Matt posted a 56 with Chris Mateo and Chris Arata coming in second with a 59. Four teams tied with scores of 60. Andy Aguilar and Dan Barreras won the tiebreaker for third, with Mike McErlain and Bob Montreuil placing fourth. It took the second level tiebreaker to determine that Jim Barnes and Gene VanPuymbroeck placed fifth ahead of Mike and Dany Jensen.

Jim and Gene birdied both #9 and #18 to win both ends of the Rabbit Side Pot and won the Low Gross Side Pot. The team of Chris and Chris took the Low Net Side Pot and one of the four skins. Norm Akita and Val Aguiniga won two of the skins with birdies on #2 and #15. The other skin was an eagle on #16 by Andy Aguilar and Dan “I Never Win Any Skins” Barreras.

Paul Itokazu hit it stiff twice to win closest to pin on both par threes on the front. Devin Fisse and Fred Aguiniga won the remaining closest to the pins.

High Points!

There were lots of good scores in Sunday’s Stableford tournament.

Gary Toepper also finished one point out of a tie for first. Patrick Beaulieu won the tiebreaker with Chris Arata for 3rd and Mike Comer placed 5th.

Chris Arata posted a net 68 for the Low Net Side Pot win. Jim Cottrell’s reputation obviously preceded him as no one even challenged him for the Low Gross Side Pot.

Ladies Day!

The team of Beth Klemm and Lynn Burns were the big winners at the Member/Guest tournament held under warm and sunny skies Saturday.

Beth and Lynn shot a best ball 59 that put them in a tie with Andy Aguilar and John Raskoph and Barry Gearhart and Eric Shaffer in the Director’s Flight, however came in third in the tiebreaker. Andy and John won the tiebreaker with Barry and Eric taking second.

Beth and Lynn did end up taking two of the side pots though. Their combined net of 15 on the par threes and a combined net of 132 won the par threes and overall Nassau pots for a total of $390.

In the President’s Flight, Matt Ward and Mark Hobaugh posted a 59 to win with Bob Wang and Steve Guzman taking the tiebreaker over Danton Bringas and William Moison for second.

In the rest of the Nassau side pots, Andy Aguilar and John Raskoph’s 64 took the front nine and Bob Wang and Steve Guzman’s 63 won the back. Each team split $200. Brian Ferguson and Paul Burns, Lynn’s husband, made it around in 56 putts to win that pot.

In the “Miss Congeniality” best ball net pars side pot, the teams of Chris Arata and Thanh Tran and Jim Barnes and Joe Obot shared the $200 pot.

Jim Barnes, Matt Ward, Steve Guzman and Patrick Nicolet each won $50 raffle gift certificates while Fred Aguiniga and guest Carl Kaufman won free club memberships for 2009.

The best news of the day was that the club raised $335 for the AJGC and Shoreline Junior Classic tournaments for next year with the inside the circle challenge on hole #4. Thanks to everyone who participated.

The regular closest to the pins were won by Jim Cottrell, Thanh Tran, Lynn Burns and Bob Wang.

Danton Bringas apparently powdered his tee shot down by the ropes on #6 to win the long drive.

Tie one on!

In the most competitive tournament of the year Ron White won his first tournament ever by taking the second flight today with a net 68.

Oddly enough, this was one of the few results that wasn’t settled by a tiebreaker.

Dick Dalton won the first flight with a 68, but it took a tiebreaker with Chris Mateo to decide.

Siva Ramamurthy won the tiebreaker for third place over Val Aguiniga and Kieran O’Donoghue won the tiebreaker with Gene Van Puymbroeck and Paul Itokazu for fifth.

(You will notice a theme…)

In a three way tiebreaker, John Brown placed second, Bob Flores placed third and Chris Arata took fourth, all with net 69’s. Andy Aguilar finished fifth by himself.

Ron White also cashed with the Low Net Side Pot, but it took, you guessed it, a tiebreaker with Chris Mateo.

Chris Mateo and Dick Dalton both had 29 putts and, by mutual agreement, decided to split the pot in order to save the Tournament Director from computing yet another tiebreaker.

Andy Aguilar, Bob Wang, Dick Dalton and Terry Fujitani won the Closest to the Pins. No tiebreakers required.

At least Gene Van Puymbroeck broke the skins tie by winning two.

Spread the Wealth!

A total of 26 skins were won at today’s tournament spread across 11 players.

Danton Bringas was the big winner in flight one with two gross and two net skins worth $15 each while Jonathan Cho won two gross and three net skins worth $10 each in flight two.

Other multiple skin winners were, in flight one, Mike McErlain and Danny “I never win any skins” Barreras with two each and, in flight two, Carl Werner, Bob Montreuil and Andy Bang with four, three and two skins respectively.

Nobody hit it particularly close on the par threes today despite almost everyone playing from the whites. Val Aguiniga hit it to 5′ on #8 and Shoreline GC rookie Patrick Nicolet won his first gift certificate sticking his tee shot on #4 to 11′1″.

Welcome to the club Patrick and Zacharie. Hope to see you at many more events.

In addition to winning a skin on #12, Chris Mateo hit 15 greens in regulation to take that side pot. When you hit 15 greens, you expect to post a good number, and he did. His gross 71, net 64 took the Low Net pot. Oh, and his “stiff” approach on #17 to “kick in” birdie range (26′) got the closest to the pin.

SERIOUSLY, NONE OF YOU GUYS COULD GET WITHIN 26 FEET ON 17 FROM THE WHITE TEES!

Danton Bringas got around in 30 putts to take the Low Putts side pot.

Double Major!

If anyone asks who the club champion is, you don’t have to ask Match Play or Stroke Play. It’s the same person.

Charlie McDonald.

Charlie defeated George Mahoney 6 & 5 in Sunday’s finals after being pushed to 19 holes in his semifinal match against Val Aguiniga.

Bill Ball chipped in for eagle on #16 to close out Fred Aguiniga 3 & 2 in the President’s Flight final.

Andrew Cho continued his strong play taking the Director’s Flight 3 & 2 over Bob Montreuil.

There were so many highlights from this weekends play.

In the qualifying round Charlie used surgical precision to shoot a 67 that included 7 birdies.

Andrew Cho shot a personal best gross 72 from the whites to be the top seed in the Director’s Flight.

In the Championship Flight quarterfinals, three matches came down to #18 with Val Aguiniga’s dramatic win over Ken Spindola noteworthy. Val drained a birdie putt from the back of #17 to a red flag to even the match He then used a fortunate bounce off a tree that kept his tee shot out of the driving range and brilliant flop shot to advance to the semis.

Not surprisingly, Charlie’s 67 took the Low Gross Side Pot. He also collected two closest to the pins and, despite his seven birdies, he only won two Skins.

Fred “The Flying Tomato” Aguiniga won Low Putts Side Pot yet again.

Danny Barreras won the Low Net Side Pot and a pair of Skins with Norm Akita also winning two Skins.

Young and Old!

(sorry Dick, you ARE old.)

Andrew Cho (net 66) and Dick Dalton (net 65) won their flights in the NCGA Net Amateur Qualifier July 19.

Dick, Vince LaFroscia and Gary Toepper won the entries to the Sectional Qualifying for the NCGA Net Am.

Andrew was ineligible to qualify as he is not yet 18. However, Jonathan Cho proposed that the father should get the entry if the son turns out to be ineligible. His argument fell on deaf ears.

Don’t feel too sorry for Andrew though. His net 66 won him the Low Net Side Pot in a tiebreaker for $70.

Through many tiebreakers, the alternates to the Net Am are, in order, Mahesh Subramaniam, John Chwalek, Shmuel Goshen, Patrick Beaulieu, and Keith Ikegami.

Despite a painful to watch four-putt on #14, Norm Akita won the Low Gross Side Pot with his 74.

You would think that to shoot net 65, a person would have to putt well. Dick Dalton made it around in 28 putts and won the $40 Low Putts Side Pot.

There were lots of birdies today as half the field shot net par or better. With lots of birdies come lots of skins. Norm won two of the eight with a chip in birdie on #6 and another birdie on #13.

Major Upset!

In a major upset, the 2008 Shoreline Golf Club Medal Play Champion is Charlie McDonald.

Charlie started slowly on Saturday bogeying three of the first four holes, but then rebounded with seven birdies to finish the first day with a 68 and a six shot lead. Gene VanPuymbroeck took second in the Championship Flight followed by Siva Ramamurthy.

This is Charlie’s seventh Medal Play Championship.

Dan Barreras used a gross 35 on the back on Sunday to win the First Flight. Michael Jensen placed second via a tiebreaker over Bob Wang.

John Dalton won a very competitive Second Flight over Scott Vonderohe and Andrew Cho. Scott had the shot of the tournament holing out for eagle 2 from 131 yards on #5 on Saturday.

Danton Bringas’ net 64 on Saturday took the Low Net Side Pot while Danny Barreras back nine on Sunday won the tiebreaker for the Low Net Pot. That net 29 also won him the Low Net - Back Nine Side Pot.

Charlie’s 68 earned him the Saturday Low Gross Pot, however, Val Aguiniga won the tiebreaker on Sunday.

A total of nine skins were earned on Saturday by seven players with Charlie and Ken Spindola winning two each.

Norm Akita won two of the six skins on Sunday.

Old Timers Day

Gene Van Puymbroeck made it two for two in NCGA qualifiers this year. After making the NCGA Zone team back in February, he joins Jack Woods in representing Shoreline GC in the NCGA Senior 4-Ball Net Tournament this August.

Jack Woods net 64 won him his entry and first place in the second flight along with the low net side pot.

Gene shot a gross 70, net 66, that won him the first flight, the low gross white tees side pot and three skins that included a chip in for eagle on #9 and a closest to the pin on #8.

Danny Barreras knocked it stiff on both #4 and # 17 for two closest to the pins. He made the putt on #17 to win a skin there too.

Jim Cottrell rebounded from a tree eating his ball on #2 to win a skin on #4.

It was a family affair May 3 at Poppy Hills as Jonathan and Andrew Cho, Dick Dalton and Linda Reddick and Bob and Toni Montreuil all were in contention in the Stableford.

Kevin Tiffin, hitting his first good shot of the day, won the big closest to the pin on #13 for $25 with a shot to 5′11″.

George Mahoney smoked the rest of the first flight with gross 70, net 61. Thank goodness he wasn’t in any of the side pots or he would have won everything.

Netin Mehta edged out Rick Wheat and Ed Dodds with a net 68 to take the second flight.

Ken Spindola won the tiebreaker for low net side pot and also took the low gross by default. He won a skin with a par, yes that’s right, a par on #7.

TIGER’S STREAK ENDS

You’re saying to yourself, “NO!”

“I saw him make the putt on 18 to win at Bay Hill.”

Yes he won the PGA event, but his birdie only put him and his partner Chris Arata into a tie for first in the second flight at the Pro Am by Proxy where the team of Rick Wheat and Carl Peterson’s back nine 28 won the tiebreaker.

Shoreline will go down as the site of Tiger’s first defeat of 2008.

Chris is having a Tiger-like year having cashed in three of his four tournaments this year.

The team of Dick Dalton and Ken Duke won the first flight by a Tigeresque margin of three strokes.

Siva Ramamurthy won a skin, two closest to the pins, the Low Gross side pot and paired with Bubba Watson to take third in his flight.

This event marked the return to action of Norm Akita who took fourth in his flight and took home two skins.

Welcome back Norm!

The Veteran and The Rookie

Fourteen year old Andrew Cho, playing in his first ever Shoreline GC tournament, joined club veteran Bill Anderson as flight winners in today’s Tournament of Champions. Both shot net 66’s to win their flights by two shots over Dan Barreras and Shamus Brady. Andrew and Bill are the first to qualify for next year’s Tournament of Champions.

Bill pretty much won every way you could.

He also won the “Champion of Champions”, tournament inside the tournament, for flight winners of the past year. He also took the Low Net Side Pot and won a skin with a birdie on #8 after getting the closest to the pin.

Chris Arata is definitely on a roll. After taking second in his flight and earning a spot on our Zone Tournament team last month, he and his partner Doug Patterson beat out Bob Wang and Kurt Klemm to win the 2-Person Best Ball event on March 2. Chris also won a skin. I think he needs to start buying some drinks.

The team of Gary Toepper and Jim Cottrell won the tiebreaker for 4th over Bill Ball and Todd Rich.

Bob Wang edged his own partner Kurt Klemm to take the Low Net Side Pot while Val Aguiniga won the tiebreaker to take the Low Gross. There were six skins worth $15 each with Danny Barreras taking two with birdies on #6 and #16.

Our club NCGA Zone Qualifying tournament was held this past weekend in glorious sunshine at Shoreline Golf Links.

George Mahoney held the first round flight 1 lead after Saturday while Jonathan Fisher led the second flight. Both went on to win their flights and make the South Bay Zone Tournament team. They will be joined by Chris Arata and Siva Ramamurthy. Siva made a big move on Sunday passing 20 players with his net 69.

The big winner however was Jonathan Fisher. In addition to winning the flight and an entry to the Zone, he also won a skin on Saturday, and BOTH low net side pots (Saturday in a tie breaker) for a total of $204 in cash, $100 in gift certificates and his Zone entry. Not a bad weekend.

The tie breaker for 5th/6th in the first flight between Dick Dalton and Chris Mateo went deep. They tied total net. They tied back nine on Sunday. They tied last six holes on Sunday. They tied last three holes on Sunday. You had to go back from #18 all the way to #15 before we could decide the winner.

There were some great “closest to the pin shots”: Gordon Bendorf on #4 on Saturday and Shmuel Goshen on #8 on Sunday. We also had a couple of multiple skin winners with James Jones getting 2 on Saturday and Bill Anderson pulling down 2 on Sunday.

Our next tournament is a 2-man best ball on Sunday 2/24. Grab a partner and come on out.

And don’t forget our first general meeting of the year will be held an Michael’s on Wednesday 2/20 at 6:30 PM. It’s the new member orientation so come out and meet the new members. For all you new members, come out and meet the board of directors and some of the other club members. New members get a free sleeve of golf balls just for showing up.

It was a “family affair” today at the Stableford Tournament at Shoreline today, the first tournament of the year.

J. Michael Jensen and his wife Dany, playing in her first tournament as a member, both cashed. Michael won the Flight 1 and Dany placed 4th in Flight 2.

While the course was a little soggy from the rain earlier in the week, the weather was almost perfect after a small blob of fog burned off. Bright sunshine, mild temperatures and almost no wind ruled the day.

Full tournament results can be found at:

Our next event is the NCGA Zone Qualifier on January 26 and 27. It offers the best prize the club offers all year: paid entry into the NCGA Zone Tournament including rounds at Poppy Hills and Spyglass for the top four scores in the two day, low net event.
